Do Not Bother Waking Me

When I lay upon a broken bed
With a pillow full of salted stains
When I pull the blankets to shield my head
Do not bother waking me

The light is out; I hear your steps
So far away and faint
And though I know you’ll be here yet
Do not bother waking me

The world is silent in darkest times
The night lays a blanket upon the earth
The birds are still; no morning rhymes
Do not bother waking me

The sun is still low; the stars still mute
The moon hides her face from our eyes
Each creak of sound is still in dispute
Do not bother waking me

Away in dreams I wish to be
Embraced in all that is faithful and dear
Away I fly from misery
Do not bother waking me

And somewhere near a baby sleeps
It’s breath soft and sure
And somewhere near a child weeps
Do not bother waking me
